Do invisable electric fences really work for cats?

We are thinking of getting an electric fence for our cat. He keeps running in the street. Do these really work? Are they harmful?

Answer:
NO. Don't trust them. A cat moves so fast that by them time they feel the shock of the fence, they are already over. It also, doesn't work for large dogs. My neighbor worked for many months with his dog, showing him the boundaries before he set the fence. Then he worked with him for several weeks after he set it. But, the first rabbit that enticed it, it chased right out of the yard, right over the fence. Once they are past the underground wires, the shock stops, so then the dog did not want to come back into the yard.
