Do the invisible fences really work?

We have a very big yard but live on a busy street. Because we rent we are not able to put up the traditional fence.

Answer:
Where I live there are 2 dogs that have invisible fences and they both do really well. However like others have said it does not prevent other dogs or people from coming onto the yard with the dog. You don't mention the breed or size of your dog?

I would not risk my dog with a busy street to an invisible fence. The dogs that have it seem to have been trained very well as they do not get really close to the fence. In a power outage or a low battery situation I am not sure how it would work. The systems are not cheap as in order to really be effective I am almost positive the 2 dogs that I know had porfessional installation and training remeber too a driveway or walkway. I would just walk the dog when you need to and keep a long cord/chain by the front step for when Fido needs to go out at 3AM!
